There is a consensus building among researchers that vocabulary is the missing link in reading education. Many children enter school 3,000-4,000 words behind their peers in oral vocabulary. By fifth grade this vocabulary gap has turned into a five-year deficit in reading comprehension. Even our best students are behind their grandparents and earlier generations, as both the decline in Verbal SAT scores (51 point decline) and the 15,000 word drop in vocabulary since 1950 indicate.
